In 2020, in collaboration with AFCRN, the research team at the South African National Cancer Registry has successfully acquired the AfOx Research Development Awards, University of Oxford. Leading PI: Dr Mazvita Muchengeti.

The Childhood Cancer Surveillance in Southern Africa (CCSSA) aims to establish national childhood cancer registries within 5 countries in Southern Africa. The project will be based on enhancing existing capacity in the population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and Eswatini (Swaziland) to collect and analyse data on occurrence and outcome of childhood cancers.

In the proposed study, training and subsequent establishment of the childhood cancer registries will lead to regular reports on the incidence, stage distribution, and survival outcomes. Such data will provide unique insights of the role aetiological factors, diagnostic delays (due to lack of awareness or service provision) and treatment outcomes. These data will drive action for childhood cancer prevention, awareness and diagnostic and treatment services in Africa.
